Dad’s Wisdom: Valentine’s Day

Growing up, I used to be “into” Valentine’s Day…when I didn’t have a girlfriend. In the later years, when I did have a girlfriend and it actually mattered…I couldn’t get into all of the hubbub. I think all the Hallmark commercials were just too much…they made me gag.

My dad used to joke around that he didn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day. With my mom, he’d say “everyday is Valentine’s Day!” (laughing as I’m typing) It didn’t mean much to me back then, but now that I’m on the cusp of getting married (4 months and counting!), his words, corny as they may be, come back to haunt me. In a good way, of course.

On the eve of the “most awesome of holidays,” I’m not with my fiance. She’s out with her girlfriend and I’m just hanging out so I thought I’d make a small contribution to Valentine’s Day this year. We were in San Diego last week at one of our favorite dessert shops, Michele Coulon’s Dessertier in La Jolla. It’s a cute little shop tucked into an even dinkier strip mall (if you can even call it a “mall”). They were baking fresh cookies that day and I couldn’t help but snap a picture or two.

I’m sure my fiance and I will exchange hi-five’s tomorrow. Happy Valentine’s Day y’all.
